EMPOWER PEOPLE

TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES

For over 25 years, Life Trust has collaborated with various communities in the city of Kabwe to positively impact the future of families through education.

In this endeavor, close collaboration with authorities, community leaders, and residents of the impoverished neighborhoods where we operate is paramount to us. We learn from them what is truly needed, how various forms of support are received, and what shared goals we aim to pursue for the future of their children.

The DNA of Life Trust Zambia

Why Life Trust?

OUR VISION

We believe that every individual is wanted and loved by God. Each person is precious in His eyes, regardless of background or social status. Therefore, we aim to view people through God's perspective, investing in them, and nurturing their potential.

HOW WE WORK

OUR VALUES

The appreciation of all team members, a willingness to learn in encountering diverse cultures, teamwork in an intercultural context, and the collaborative resolution of conflicts are of particular importance to us in everything we do.

WHAT WE DO

OUR MISSION

Our various areas of work all aim to empower young people and families through education, discipleship, and practical assistance to become mature Christians and to sustainably transform the communities they live in.
LIFE TRUST ZAMBIA

OUR KEY MINISTRY AREAS

Community Empowerment

Following the principle of “helping people to help themselves,” we impart skills that enable families to sustainably and independently support themselves. At the Life Trust Empowerment Campus, individuals from surrounding impoverished areas learn sewing and sustainable agriculture practices.

MORE

Partner Schools

Life Trust supports several local schools in Kabwe through sponsorships, including a school for children with disabilities and the former BOCCS schools. This initiative ensures that needy children not only receive educational opportunities but also food rations, individual care, and medical attention.

Life Trust School Waya

By providing a wholistic education for particularly vulnerable children, we aim to empower young people and their families to effectively transform their community in the impoverished neighborhood of Waya.

MORE

Life Trust Kindergarten

We want to invest in the lives of the younger children in the community to be able to positively impact them even earlier. The Life Trust Kindergarten is designed to be an oasis of play and love for the children to thrive and grow safely.

MORE

Royal Rangers

The Royal Rangers are an international youth organization shaped by both the principles of scouting and the Christian faith. The first Royal Rangers troop in Zambia was established by Life Trust in Kabwe.

MORE

Project Jonathan

Through Project Jonathan we are able to take our support beyond the children’s time of schooling. After their school time, the youths receive 8 months of practical life and discipleship training. Thereafter, they can apply for scholarships for vocational training or university, providing them with mentoring along the way.

MORE

Partner Church

Since 1982, there has been a partnership between the German church association Mülheimer Verband (MV) and the Christian Community Church (CCC) in Zambia. Currently, the MV is supporting the process of the indigenous church’s autonomy while maintaining a collaborative relationship with the CCC.

Sustainable Project Finance

The project “MehrWert” was called into being to support our work to become less dependent on donations by investing into local infrastructure, such as rental properties, that will create a financial return.

OUR HISTORY

1970: FIRST STEPS IN ZAMBIA

Traugott and Christl Hartmann are being sent to Zambia. Traugott works as an administrative staff member for the Christian Community Church (CCC), which has also been supported as a partner church by the Mülheimer Verband.

1998: THE FIRST SCHOOL OPENS

Due to the AIDS crisis and the high number of deaths at that time, Christl Hartmann founded the first school for orphaned and street children. This initial Christian-oriented school was opened in the Buyantanshi neighborhood with 200 children. Following this first BOCCS school, seven more schools were established in the vicinity of Kabwe. As a necessary legal entity, the Life Trust (Foundation) was subsequently established.

2001: FIRST CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP

The project grows rapidly, and Martin Hartmann, the son of Christl and Traugott, takes over the leadership of Life Trust as well as its BOCCS program.

2013: FURTHER LEADERSHIP CHANGES

Martin and Andrea Hartmann lead the project until the end of 2012. During this time, additional work areas are established, such as the Jonathan Project. From 2013 to 2020, Marcus and Miriam Dieckmann then take over the overall leadership of Life Trust.

2014-2017: THE TEAM GROWS

Heike Klinger becomes an integral part of the local team and has been consistently involved in the work through numerous extended stays since then - initially through the School Support Team of the BOCCS schools, later as the principal of the Life Trust School Waya. Various short-term workers extend their stay in Zambia to support the growing work. Martin and Joana Vetter, who are later succeeded by Sassan and Sophia Attazardeh, join the local leadership of Life Trust. Sabine Ryl leads the sponsorship department of Life Trust on-site from 2016 to 2023.

2018: RESTRUCTURING LIFE TRUST

Following various changes in Zambia, the government assumes control of four out of the five BOCCS schools. (One of the schools had previously been handed over to the CCC.) The remaining last school in the township area of Waya is re-registered as "Life Trust School Waya" as a private school. The support of the BOCCS schools continues to be a focus area of Life Trust for the following years, but establishing quality education at Life Trust School Waya, alongside the commitment to sponsored children at the other schools, takes precedence.

2018: LIFE TRUST SCHOOL WAYA IS OPENED

On June 21st 2018, Life Trust School Waya is officially inaugurated. It's a private school catering to over 450 especially needy children and AIDS orphans from the township area of Waya.

2018: 20 YEARS OF LIFE TRUST

2020: START OF THE LIFE TRUST EMPOWERMENT CAMPUS

With the opportunity to purchase a plot of land adjacent to our Life Trust School Waya, construction of the Life Trust Empowerment Campus commenced. Since then, individuals from the surrounding compound areas have been trained in practical vocational skills such as tailoring and agriculture.

2020: Covid-19 and change of Leadership

After over 3 and almost 10 years respectively, the Attazardeh and Dieckmann families conclude their service with Life Trust. During these years, there have been many changes, and new structures have emerged. Pia and Alex Hintz arrive in mid-2020 as successors to the previous leaders of the organization in Zambia. Amid the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are numerous challenges faced in Zambia, yet the country manages to avoid many of the anticipated severe outbreaks. During this period, the Life Trust School Waya becomes established, and the empowerment projects continue to grow steadily.

2021 - 2023: Strengthening the roles of department leaders and launching new projects

In 2021, Tamara and Simon Stahl join the team as area leaders for social work and agriculture, followed by Anne Voss in 2023, taking on the role of area leader for sponsorships. Additionally, Milly and Anthony Chitambala, were welcomed as the new Zambian leaders for Project Jonathan. The new department leader's circle, made up of Zambian and European experts significantly contributes to the growing quality of the work and they mentor other Zambian co-leaders in their respective fields.

With the leadership team strengthened, we are now able to embark on new initiatives, such as establishing a kindergarten, and forming new partnerships, including collaborations with our partner school for children with disabilities.

Over 70 staff members

Our international team comprises staff from various Life Trust departments. Most positions at Life Trust are filled by local Zambian staff. We aim to minimize the number of experts deployed from Western countries, instead focusing on training Zambian staff in strategic positions within their fields of work and empowering them to become leaders. Our goal is to make the work of Life Trust increasingly sustainable and self-reliant.
